General information

The journey to Santiago de Compostela began in England, with pilgrims sailing from Portsmouth to A Coruña. Today, the journey begins in Ferrol, 100 kilometers from Santiago de Compostela. This is the shortest distance is needed to obtain the Compostela (certificate of completion of the Camino).

The city of Ferrol is in the province of Coruña and was selected as a naval base of great interest due to its excellent location. Although the city is small, the surrounding area is attractive and worth seeing. Another of its strong points is the gastronomy, also diverse and exceptional.

Ferrol has a long history that begins around the 11th century, when the population first settled in the region. It was not until the 16th century that Ferrol gained importance.

The strategic possibilities of this city made the Spanish kings show interest in it. In addition, the river that surrounds it was the perfect reason for the construction of a port for the Royal Navy.

Pilgrims who want to make their journey a little shorter cross the bridge on Avenida das Pías, which runs from kilometer 4 to 13.

Itinerary

The tourist office in Ferrol can help you to start your journey along the Camino de Santiago. It is also the starting point to begin your route. Although the Camino is not well signposted through the city, as of October 2017 a marker was installed on the left side of Calle San Francisco, towards the Cathedral.

Calle Real is a pedestrian street that runs through the city. If you follow it, you will end up at the promenade, where the markers start again.

To make sure you are going in the right direction, keep the waters to the right. The stage from Ferrol to Neda starts in an urban area, but at the end it turns into a beautiful nature walk.

There are several stores along the route, so you won't have to worry about being too far from civilization. Xuvia is a wonderful town and an excellent place to stop for lunch halfway along the route (km. 13.5). The only really difficult section begins as you enter Pontedeume, at km. 13.5.
