Stage 17: Carrión de los Condes - Terradillos de los Templarios

Carrión was originally settled by the Romans and was known as Lacobriga. Later, the Visigoths took control of the town, as evidenced by the tombs on the cliffs to the north and south of this locality.

The Moors conquered the area around 713 and built the first castle, which was later replaced by the Church of Bethlehem.

Carrión de los Condes has a population of 2,000 inhabitants and three pilgrim hostels, in addition to having all the services you may need on your way.

This is another long day, but it is easy going on mostly flat terrain. The few climbs and descents on today's Camino are not steep or hard.

In the first part of the route there are few services, so it would be better to carry water. The national highway passes close by, although it is generally far enough away to eliminate traffic noise.

Leaving Carrión de los Condes we will walk along the Via Aquitania for more than 10 km without shadows. In high season we may find some street stalls, but we recommend leaving Carrión de los Condes equipped with everything you need in case we are not lucky.

The stretch of the ancient Roman road between Villotilla and Calzadilla is the Via Traiana, which linked Astorga with Bordeaux. It is not surprising, given its proximity, that the remains of a luxurious Roman villa have been discovered in Quintanilla de la Cueza.

The abbey of Benevivere, founded in 1065 and run by the Augustinians, is located about 4 km from Carrión. From Calzadilla de la Cueza to Terradillos de los Templarios is at least 6 km. It is said that this village belonged to the Templars. However, no records are preserved to prove it.
