Stage 4: Pamplona - Puente la Reina

The city of Pamplona was founded in 74 BC by Pompey, a Roman military and political leader. Due to its strategic location, Pamplona became a meeting point for pilgrims, in addition to encouraging many merchants to settle outside its walls.

Over time, the walls were extended around the settlements, creating three separate mini-cities. In the mid-15th century, parts of the walls were destroyed, finally unifying the city.

The route from Pamplona is a mix of countryside and busy roads. Leaving Pamplona, the route is well marked and takes you through some local parks before entering a small valley.

The first route takes you to Cizur Menor, a small town belonging to this locality. Shortly after leaving Cizur Menor, the hardest climb and descent of the day begins. However, the views at the top are well worth the effort.

Shortly before reaching the top of the hill, there is a modern fountain commemorating the legendary Fuente Reniega. According to legend, an exhausted and thirsty pilgrim was tempted there by the devil.

After leaving the Sierra del Perdón behind, we can meet the pilgrims of the Aragonese Way at Obanos, to continue along the same road to Puente la Reina.

If you wish, almost at the end of this stage you can take a small detour to visit the hermitage of Santa María de Eunate, before arriving at the hostel where you will spend the night.
