Stage 30: Portomarín - Palas de Rei

The town of Portomarín developed on both sides of the river Miño and was always protected first by the Order of Santiago. Alfonso IX transferred ownership of the town to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, which maintained a pilgrims' hostel there for centuries.

Portomarín currently has a population of 1,400 inhabitants and has ten pilgrim hostels with more than 200 beds. However, during the months of July and August it can be difficult to find a place to spend the night.

The Church of San Juan, also known as the Church of San Nicolás, is one of the largest single-nave Romanesque churches in Galicia. It was built between the late 12th and early 13th century and is also a fortress.

Today's goal is Palas de Rei, which is located at the end of the main street of Portomarín. The street is quite steep, but it is worth it because the scenery is incredible. Once you get to the top of the hill, you can see Monte San Antonio.

The rest of the ride is easy because it's all downhill from there. However, the last 3 km leading to Palas de Rei are on a dirt track, so be careful not to slip.

The route of this stage passes through villages that perfectly represent the essence of Galicia. During the stage, you will pass through Gonzar, Ventas de Narón, Ligonde, Eirexe, Portos and Os Chacotes.

Shortly after Gonzar, you will enter Castromaior, where you will find the ruins of a "castro". This gives name to several villages along the way: Castro Lardeiros, Castro Simone, Castro de Valos and Castro Marza.

From Os Chacotes, it is a 4.7 km walk to Palas de Rei, where there are 5 hostels and all the facilities we need.
